What to Do When You're Scammed: Immediate Steps

  1. 1. Stop all contact with the scammer immediately โ€” do not pay more to "recover" your money.
  2. 2. Contact your bank or payment provider immediately โ€” the sooner you call, the better the chance of recovery.
  3. 3. Preserve all evidence: screenshots, emails, phone numbers, receipts.
  4. 4. Report to your national fraud reporting agency (see directory above).
  5. 5. Report to local police if you lost a significant amount.
  6. 6. Report to the platform where you encountered the scam (dating app, social media, marketplace).
  7. 7. Alert your friends and family if the scammer has access to your contacts.
